Incorporating Pink's Senses Into Instructional Material

There's much to be said here, but I think the main "sense" I want to focus on is EMPATHY. When designing instructional materials, it is so very important to have a sense of empathy for the learner. Try to take yourself out of the position of being a subject matter expert, and recall what it was like to acquire the skills you're trying to impart back when you were a novice. Additionally, please have empathy for the learners physical and social environment --- these things may differ greatly from your own. Perhaps the learner is attempting to acquire skills in forty minute class periods, whereas you spent ten hour days totally focused. Perhaps you spent ten hour days  because you have an intense passion for the subject the learner simply doesn't share... which does not make the learner "bad"... just different from you.

  1. Mr. Briano--

I agree, empathy is so important to making sure you don't end up designing instruction for yourself. I thought a really good section in the portfolio piece of that empathy chapter was to create a list of job descriptions-- and then have other people fill in what they think ANOTHER person does in their job. Then have the people who actually DO the job comment on it.
More for the business world, but can be applied across any organization
